Fishing

Types of Fishing in Cancun
There are several types of fishing in Cancun, from fly fishing to deep sea fishing. Types of fishing include different styles for the beginner or the experienced fishermen.

Fly Fishing.- It consists in using artificial bait called fly, made out of animal feathers or hair. This type of fishing is done in shallow clear waters, reaching even 1 foot deep. Light graphite rods and boats specially modified for shallow waters are used. This kind of fishing can be done in sea, lakes, lagoons or rivers.

Spinning or Light Tackle.- It is done in waters with an average depth of 9 feet. Very resistant graphite or polycarbonate rods are required. Lures and baits tend to be bigger and brighter. Reels contain up to 300 yards of line. This type of fishing can be done in the sea, lakes, lagoon and rivers.

Bottom Fishing.- Bottom fishing is done in deep waters where the boat anchors. An extra weight is added to the hook so it descends without problems. Lures are usually small fish imitations. A lot of patience is required to catch a good size fish.

Deep Sea Fishing. - In this type of fishing more equipment is required, including some devices to facilitate the fish schools location, different resistance and flexibility rods and, of course, a larger amount of line. Lures are the biggest among all types of fishing and they are displayed in multiple hooks so they look like a fish school. Sometimes real bait is used instead of lures.

The most popular Cancun fish species are Sawfish, Bonito, Snapper, Grupper, Kingfish, Roosterfish, Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, Snook and Sea Trout.

Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Barracuda, Catfish and Tuna are species that you can find in deep waters mainly, therefore it is most likely to not catch one if you're practicing fly fishing or light tackle fishing.

Each species has a season and it is determined by a number of facts. The temperature of the water can reveal abundance of one or another species while some endangered species are protected by law. The two kinds of Marlin and Sailfish are protected, so if you catch one it will be weighed, measured and photographed for record effects, and immediately released.

Other Cancun fish species go through close seasons for reproductive or sanitary alert reasons. In lagoon areas mollusks, not fish are often prone to go through these close seasons. However, if you catch a fish in these conditions it has to go back to the sea dead or alive. Your guide can tell you in case this happens.

If the fish you catch is not in close season and it is edible, you can take it. There is a number of fish you're allowed to take with you for personal consumption. Again, your guide can assist in telling you which ones are better and the recommended quantity. At the marina they can cut the fish in filets. Most hotels will accept to cook the fish your way for lunch or dinner. Talk to the hotel Concierge, Ma?tre or Chef about it.

Scuba Diving Cancun

Scuba Diving Cancun is a paradise full of attractions. One of its most valuable treasures are found underwater, it's The Maya Reef, the second largest in the world just after the Great Australian Barrier.

It stretches from Cabo Catoche in Mexico, to the Bay Islands in Honduras and it runs parallel to the shore at a distance fluctuating between 300 feet and 120 miles

This richness has turned the Mexican Caribbean into the SCUBA diving and snorkeling capital of the world, due to places like Cancun and Cozumel mainly, where visibility in the water compliments the beauty of the reefs, its fauna and flora. We invite you to explore a world of diving possibilities in Mexico. If you know how to do it, you can take Scuba Diving Lessons here and enjoy this unique experience!

Day Diving in the Mexican Caribbean

Day diving in the Mexican Caribbean offers you a fresh and tranquil scenery to the observer. Enjoy the different blue tones and crystal clear waters of the Caribbean. There are different spots to practice day diving in the Riviera Maya, this caribbean coastline in Mexico offers some of the best places for SCUBA diving.

The Mexican Caribbean is quickly becoming the world diving center because of its easy access from the US and Europe, the quality of its services, the exceptional beauty of its reefs and the excellent underwater visibility, reaching up to 120 feet.

Let yourself be carried along the reef by the gentle current without any effort, while contemplating the “great blue silence”, thus called because the water absorbs all the spectrum colors but blue, covering everything with that tonality.

You can also visit almost exclusively some of the dozens of shipwrecks, explore its compartments and meet its new exotic inhabitants.

It is possible to obtain a diving certification within few days or get a plan for one, two or many immersions for certified divers.
Access a gratifying experience without parallel combining mental relaxation and physical exercise.

Night Diving in the Mexican Caribbean

The diving scenery will acquire a completely different dimension when you practice night diving in the Mexican Caribbean. The absence of solar light gives a different touch to the underwater panorama, ideal for night diving in the Riviera Maya. This will be definitely an exciting experience due to different factors:

First, our own emotions and sensations towards the night. By nature, wonder reaches a higher point at these hours.

Another factor is that the blue filter prevailing by day disappears. The effect of direct artificial light over the reef flora and fauna is dramatic when it comes to color explosion.

In addition, artificial lights become the only reference for position because darkness compromises the sense of orientation. This slow motion of lanterns against the dark ocean is a thrilling image by itself.

One more is that by night the active fauna has different behavior and habits, just as it is on land.

Given these factors night diving is considered a more risky sport than day diving, so it requires more weather and logistic precautions. It is essential to do it in small groups and in places where day dives were done before.

Even so and if you enjoy extreme sports, night diving is a trip to another world that we widely recommend.
